If you compare this Skills Audit to my first one you can see that
I have improved my weaknesses that I originally had.

Question 4 and 5! Who would be the audience for your media product and how did you attract them?

My audience was aimed at 11-16 year old so therefore, the language had to be kept quite simple so they could understand it. The colours needed to be bright so they would be kept interested and there had to be a variety of images for their interest too! It's been kept friendly throughout and various prizes to be won! It's cheap so many young people could afford it which may attract them to this magazine over other magazines!

Here is a video I made :)

Here is one of the questionnaires I got someone to fill out!
I did have more but this was one of the key ones!

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product is a magazine based on the pop genre. Once I looked into other pop magazine and their typical audience I noticed that they tend to aim their product at teenage girls. This then became my aim whilst I was creating my magazine. On the front cover, my main image is of a girl dressed in a black glittery playsuit with large ear rings and other jewellery. When I looked into other pop magazines I found that when often females would appear as the main image but they were dressed in a ‘pop’ way. They never wore particularly revealing clothing as it’s aimed at young girls and they always stood in a casual way as it’s suppose to be a young girls magazine. I took this into consideration whilst creating mine so my main image is only posed slightly and is more friendly than ‘revealing’. When I took these photo’s I booked the photo studio out as this looked to be how many other pop magazines in particular did theirs. This meant that the background was pure white and allowed me to fill it with other plugs/puffs/taglines.  As it’s a pure white background, it implies that the magazine is completely innocent and there aren’t any hidden messages within the background. However, if my background was taken in a run down place it would clash with the typical ‘pop’ theme and probably wouldn’t suit the target audience.

My product is quite colourful and contains a lot of information and text which was something I found nearly all pop magazines did. This is once again as the target audience are young girls so stereotypically they prefer more feminine colours and need something that will attract their attention.  However, I didn’t want my main image to be dressed is extremely bright colours like some other pop magazines do as it would make her blend in too much with the rest of the text/images. Also by dressing her in feminine colours it would distant the secondary audience of boys away as not only would the colour scheme of the text be ‘girly’ colours but now the main image has also followed that stereotype. Whereas, if she is dressed in more neutral colours, it would allow young boys who ‘like’ this particular artist to feel more comfortable about reading the article.

I do believe overall that my magazine probably supports dominate ideas about my social group as it does appeal to girls more by following typical feminine colours and involving ideologies linked to boys and dieting such as “boy crush” and “new diet crazes” as this is what is stereotypically linked to females. The use of the words also reflects younger girls, ‘crush’ as it implies it’s nothing serious. However, the fact that the main image still complies with main ideologies about females such as wearing make-up and jewellery, it does challenge it slightly by wearing more neutral colours that apply to both males and females.

All of the Finals!

Here are my final pieces, front cover, contents and double page spread!

Monday 8 April 2013

Final Double Page Spread!

This is my final double page spread.

After reviewing my rough draft I noticed that quite a bit needed to be changed in order to make it look more like a 'pop' magazine.

Firstly, as I added in the 'progression of double page spread', the word 'weeks' was changed as I felt it looked too plain to be in a pop magazine. I got the idea to change it from the box down the left hand side as I thought if I alternate the colours it would bring  more interest to the page.

The colours are also consistent through out with the use of light blues and pinks. This is because it is mostly aimed at young girls, however, there is a secondary audience of boys. I felt the colours matched throughout my contents and front and wanted to keep to a certain theme.

I also decided to dress the model in mostly black as it would then suit any colour and keep slightly more neutral and would therefore appeal to both male and females. It also makes her stand out slightly more as she doesn't fit with the colour scheme of mostly blues and pinks but she does still suit the page.

I added 'exclusive interview' in the top right as I felt it needed something there to break the page up and to also make the readers feel like they're reading something that no one else has read before.
I kept the style of writing simple so that the audience could understand what was being said.
Furthermore, I also added details of the new single and where the readers can listen to it as it was something that appeared in a lot of magazines.

Whilst looking through pop magazine I noticed that they don't use the drop capital letter. I couldn't find one pop magazine where they did so I decided that I would be conventional to a pop magazine if I didn't include it. In addition, I didn't feel a drop capital would be suitable as there isn't a massive amount of introduction which is where it is usually found. There isn't a huge introduction because I felt that the readers being young (11-16) would lose interest quickly if they weren't reading about that artist.

Progression of double page spread!

Whilst I was creating my double page spread I created the 'background' first before adding any of the main text. I knew where I wanted the main body of text to go and where the main image would be so everything else I tried to place around it so it would all fit in together. I quickly realised that I didn't have anything down the left hand side of the page and as it is a pop magazine I needed to add something in there otherwise the page would look too boring and plain.

I came up with the idea to add a few statistics down the side. Although they are 'stat's' they're hardly complicated and if anything add to the idea of 'gossip' which was what I wanted. We did honestly take 277 pictures on the second photo shoot so I thought that would be interesting to the readers. It also would allow them to realise that we didn't get a perfect picture straight away and it isn't always the way.

Furthermore, whilst I was adding those stats down the left hand side I used it as a way to add slightly more colour to the page. By alternating the boxes it brings a bit more life into the double page spread. It also is consistent with the contents page and front cover and matches the colours used on there.

Later on I then decided that I needed to change the colour of 'weeks' so by alternating that it all matched quite nicely.

Rough Double Page Spread!

Above is my rough double page spread.
When I complete my final double page I will need to fill the gap in the bottom left as it's too plain compared to a lot of other pop magazines. This is because pop magazines are typically aimed at 11-16 year olds and so they would typically be more interested in a lot of a colour and items everywhere rather than it being plain.
There also isn't a range of colours and although the main title/pull-quote does stand out, I could do something to make it stand out even more. For example, either change to colour of it, change the colour of 'weeks, or change the size of it.
Another thing that will need to be changed it that fact that there is no pull-quote apart from the title. Adding this will encourage the reader to want to continue to read as it would have hopefully have caught their interest.
The top of the page also doesn't have much to it. It once again looks a bit plain for a pop magazine.
I will re-do the double page and try to change some of these things.

Proposal: Double Page Spread!

What type of double page spread will it be?
For my double page spread I have chosen to base it on an interview in a question and answer format. I think this would be most appropriate as my target audience are girls between the ages of 11-16. I believe that this is what they would find most interesting.

What type of questions will you ask?
For my questions I plan to ask simple yet interesting questions. They cannot be too complicated as I have a young target audience, however, as they are young they need to be kept interested more. I will take the interview and show it in a kind of chatty way but not too much otherwise it may distract away from the actual interview. Questions based on their 'new single', love life and childhood should be included as this is what stereo-typically interests young girls.

How will your main image be placed?
I will have one main image on my double page spread as there are already several throughout the magazine and once again, I don't want to over-load the page with too many images as the main purpose of the double page spread is for it to contain an interview about the particular artist. I plan to place it on the right hand side as this is a convention of the a lot of magazines.

What colours will you use?
The colours need to be consistent with the front cover and contents page so it will looks like it could all belong in an actual magazine. It would also be conventional to have a background on the double page spread rather than leaving it white as I have done with the contents and front cover. A white background worked well with those pages, however, I think my double page spread will be more effective if it has some form of a background.

What will you use for the main title/mast head?
When I looked into other pop magazines in particular they tended to use quotes from the interview as their main title. This then encourages the reader to want to continue as it would hopefully interest them.

Analysis of a Double Page Spread Music Magazine; Interview!

The magazine I have chosen to look at is ‘Top of the Pops’ which includes an interview with Misha B. The genre of magazine is quite clear as it says it in the masthead but it is a pop magazine. Top of the pops is said to be the favourite children and teen magazine. Around 18% of its readership is boys whilst the majority is girls at 82%. They clearly target girls through by the choice of topics and people they include as well as their chosen colour scheme. The age range tends to be girls between 11-15. Misha B (the person being interviewed) originally found fame on the TV show ‘The X Factor’ which is typically known to search for the next ‘POP star’. As this is where she found fame many people know her and could possibly take interest in her. She tends to base herself around the pop scene which would fit in well with the magazine.

The masthead (title) of the article is actually a quote from the interview. This instantly attracts attention from the reader and tries to persuade them to read the article. As it’s only a few words from the interview people won’t understand entirely what it’s about so would need to read the whole thing in order to find out. They highlight one of the words, ‘heart’ and also put it in capitals because it implies that a lot of the interview will revolve around that subject but also because it fits in with the typical teenage subject of love. For the sub-heading they use current slang words such ‘emosh’ as this suits their main audience of teenage girls. They don’t use a drop capital as it’s in the style of an interview. This could be because they do not include paragraphs of information about the artist as people are expected to know but also because it’s aimed at young people so they wouldn’t want to over power them with too much text. The question that is being asked is in bold and a different colour whilst the answer is in normal font and colour. Each question is in a different paragraph but it is all kept quite close together. Each question asked is most formal but quite personal. They do however use slight conversational words such as ‘so’ and at the end they do add a comment about the interview. There’s a reference to her latest single and they do question her about that which is obviously one of the main reasons why she done the interview, to promote her album. They also ask typical girly questions about her dream date, boy issues and childhood life. They include two pull-quotes other than the main title. One is surrounded by a heart which again links to them highlighting the ‘heart’ in their title. Another is in the middle of all the text which helps to draw your eye to the text and once again should make you want to continue to read.  They use boxes as smaller sub-headings so the reader would know what to expect in the next few questions. They also have a smaller box at the bottom which gives information on the artist’s new single and album and where the readers can listen to it. The colour scheme which they use is typically girl’s colours which include pinks and light blues mostly. This again fits in well with their target audience of girls between the ages of 11-15.

‘Top of the Pops’ includes one main image of the artist and two other smaller ones. One of the smaller ones is of Misha B on ‘The X-Factor’ as this is where many people will know her from. The main image is based on the right page and she is wearing drawing attention to the necklace. It consumes most of the page but does have text boxes overlapping at the bottom. It looks as though she has been cut out from her original shoot and placed onto the page with a coloured background. They use a long shot in the corner so you can view her whole body.
To the left is annotated notes about the chosen double page spread. Below is the original copy in colour.

Task 2: Planning your DPS!

What type of double page spread do you intend to create?
As my target audience is aimed at girls between the ages of approx 11-15, I think the best layout would be an interview in the style of question and answers. This is because it would allow the readers to 'get to know' the artist being interviewed and it also allows them to read the direct words the interviewee has said.
Also as it's a pop magazine it's typically known to be quite open and more chatty than informative.

How you intend to incorporate original images?
I intend to incorporate original images but using a main image across one side of the double page spread. Furthermore, because it's a magazine aimed at young teenage girls there should maybe be other smaller images to break up the text so it doesn't overpower the readers. For this I could also include other images of features coming up on other pages or smaller features that are separate on the double page spread to give the readers a break from reading the same thing.

How will you obtain information and images for your feature spread?
For images, I will take these myself or the person of my choice. If I decide to include smaller images of other people then I will also need to take photo's of them. For the information, I will research into typical questions and answers that are often included in magazines.

Visual style?
The double page spread needs to be consistent with the front cover and contents page. This means that I will need to you the same colours and similar fonts. The layout needs to be related in some way, however, because it is a completely different style to the front cover and contents it won't be exactly the same but there needs to be some relation between them all. As it is aimed at younger people, it needs to include a variation of colour to keep them interested. Also it pop magazines typically include a lot of colour and have different puffs/plugs/features all over the page.

What style of writing you intend to use?
The writing style needs to use simple words as it is aimed at younger readers so they may not understand the writing if it includes longer and more complex words. As I will most probably write it in the format of a question and answer style, it needs to be simple questions that any one will understand even if they aren't a fan of the artist/band.

Task 1- Double Page Spread!

What is a double page spread?
It is two facing pages containing appropriate material which are intended to be view together. It is often abbreviated to DPS and could also be referred to as a 'feature spread'.

Different types of feature spread/double page:

Interview:
This is where an individual or group are asked questions and then the responses are written up. This is usually written up as a question and answer style or as a continuous prose. This would be useful for pre-teens/teens who are fans of the individual/group. This style allows the reader to understand what the individual/group are saying and it really gives a personal feel about it. This would be a useful style to use for my pop magazine as it's target audience is typically female pre-teens/teens. It would allow the young female readers to connect with the person being interviewed.

Fashion Piece:
This could be items of fashion from a range of places spread across the double page spread. This would stereotypically apply to females, however, you could include items of mens fashion to appeal to them also. Depending on the type of features shown, it could vary who it appeals to. This could be suitable for the genre of my magazine (pop) as I could base the feature on the style of fashion that would apply to pre-teens/teen girls.

Review:
Reviews on particular products are sometimes featured across the double page spread. Reviews can include items such as concerts, latest CD's/music or upcoming bands/artists. The item that's being reviewed would need to appeal to the target audience because they'd need to find an interest in reading it. This could be suitable for my magazine as I could include items revolving around bands/artists that are typically in the pop genre.

Rough Contents!

Above is a rough of my contents page.
I don't like the colour scheme that has been used as it is different to the front cover and doesn't feel consistent.
It also looks too plain as there are a lot of blank gaps making the page look boring.
There aren't enough pictures there and considering it's aimed at 11-16 year olds there should be more.
The layout of the contents page isn't consistent throughout and doesn't have a sense of a proper theme.

Sunday 10 March 2013

Proposal for Contents Page!

Who is the magazine aimed at?
The magazine is a pop magazine and typically this would mean that it's target audience would be girls around the ages of 11-16.

What will be included on the contents page?
The contents page needs to include all the important information about what will be in the magazine. When looking through published pop magazines, I noticed that they do no include every little detail but just the things that are most likely to interest readers.

What colours will you use?
The colours will need to be bright, bold and interesting. This is because it's a pop magazine aimed at girls aged between 11-16. However, it shouldn't be quite as bright as the front cover because the front cover's job is to catch the readers eye, whereas, the contents page needs to let people know what will be in the magazine in order to interest them further. The reader needs to be able to read the contents page without being too distracted by the colours and images.

How many images will you use?
As I said in my last paragraph, I don't want to over power the readers with too many images as the content pages main job is to inform. However, there still needs to be a range of some images as it is aimed at younger people who need to be kept interested.

What types of text will be used?
For my text I plan to use various sub headings such as win opportunities, celebrity gossip items as well as real life features.

Photo's for Contents

When I looked at other pop music magazines many of them used photo's of objects rather than a single image of a person. So I decided to use this idea and include it onto my contents page. As my target audience is aimed at mostly teen girls I thought I'd apply images that would be to their interest so items such as bags, nail varnish's etc...

Once again for this image I need to cut it out and edit it onto the contents.

I cut out each nail varnish which I wanted to use as I decided to use all of them as it'd be too many.

Thursday 7 March 2013

Rough Front Cover!

The rough front cover, above, looks too plain to be a pop magazine. This is because it's aimed at 11-16 year olds so should be colourful and have loads of images etc...
There's too many white spaces which should be filled with images and text.
There aren't enough effects used which could help to improve the front cover.
For example, the main tag line 'anna' doesn't really stand out much and blends in with everything else.
This, along with the mast head, should be the two things that stand out the most and this isn't the case with the one above.
Overall, it looks to varied and doesn't look consistent or anything like an actual pop magazine.

Tuesday 5 March 2013

Photo's for Front Cover!

Although for my front cover I used one main image that takes up the majority of the front cover, I also used smaller images to fill the space. I got this idea from other pop magazines as many of them are full of colour, text and images. They often contain many smaller images to add colour and fill space. Also because the target audience is aimed for young teens and pre-teens, there needs to be more images and less text.

These were some of the photo's that featured on the front cover.  I need to edit them and cut them out.

2nd Photo Shoot!

After noticing that the first photo's from the first shoot weren't usable, I re-took them to try and get them to fit the pop genre that I was aiming for. Below are a few of the other pictures which I took however didn't pick them.

This picture shows the face clearly which would allow the viewer to connect more, however, I didn't feel it was right for the front cover and didn't show clearly enough that it was a pop magazine. This is partially to do with the fact that it is a close up and therefore, doesn't show her clothes in any detail.

This photo wasn't chosen as although it was a completely different shot to the first one, when I looked at other pop front covers, many didn't show the whole body unless it was a band on the front cover.
Although this picture is similar to the one that I actually picked, I found that it didn't fulfill the 'normal' features that pop front covers have as she wasn't really posing and it looked a bit too plain and too casual to put on the front cover.
Below is the photo that I am actually picking as my main image on the front cover. This is   because it is close enough to gather certain detail such as the clothing and make-up which makes it more clear that it is a pop magazine. Also it looks more 'pop' than the previous image as she is posing rather than just simply standing.

Published Contents Pages!

Below are some published contents pages that I looked at to gain ideas for my magazine contents page. They have both have completely different layouts/designs, however, both work well.

Published Front Covers!

Whilst creating the front cover for my music magazine, I looked at already published pop music magazines to see how they lay their magazines out, the fonts they use and the type of information they put on them.
Here are a few that I looked at;

Shooting the photos-2nd time schedule!

Photography Planning:

What?
Taking photos for the front cover of the music magazine which is based on the genre of pop.

When?
I am planning to take them on Friday 8th of February. I've already taken some studio photos, however, I noted some problems so I'm hoping to take the final ones Friday.

How?
I am planning to take them in the college studio as this will hopefully have more of a professional look and carry on with the typical pop magazine genre.

Why?
I need to do this so that the photos will have a clear background and look as professional as they can be.

Who?
I am using the same person as before but this time I picked her outfits and I will also do her make-up in order for her to look the way of a pop star.

Review of photos!

We took a few photo's in the studio for the front cover of the music magazine. However, once I uploaded them onto the computer and reviewed them, I noted that they didn't look like a pop magazine. Once I reviewed these we booked the photo studio again to re-take the pictures and tried a different style of shooting. We altered the lighting in the studio, changed her clothes and changed make-up.

When I looked at other pop magazines I realised that in order to make it look like a pop magazine, she needed to wear more heavily made make-up and dress either in more 'daring'  clothes or brighter coloured clothes.

Tuesday 29 January 2013

Shooting the photo's schedule!

Shooting the photo's:

What;
My aim is to create a pop music magazine and in order to do this I will use the college photo studio to take the photo's for my front cover.

Where;
I have booked the college photo studio to take the pictures because when I looked at professional pop music magazines they had plain white backgrounds usually.

When;
I am planning to take the photo's on the 1st of February 2013 as this is when the studio has been booked.

Who;
I have arranged with a friend to be the model for my music magazine as she has certain connotations about her that are similar to a typical pop music fan/artist.

Monday 28 January 2013

Front Cover Proposal!

Who are you aiming your magazine at specifically?
The magazine will be aimed at pre-teens/teens, just generally of school age. There will also be more of an aim towards the female gender as they are the typical pop fans. However, there will need to be a secondary audience will be most likely be young boys or those of an older generation interested in pop music.

What will your magazine be about?
Typical contents would include an interview with the person who is featured on the front which will be viewed to be the main feature. There will also be a section on fashion/make-up (typical girly items), a page on 'real life issues' such as 'embarrassing moments' or readers views/stories/opinions.

What are your ideas for cover lines?
Cover lines such as the artist's name as this will be expected to be a main feature within the magazine.

What title have you decided on and why?
The titles need to fit in with the pop theme but also need to be original so names such as; 'top hits' 'top pops' 'Notes' The Beat' 'Simply pop' or 'pop rocks!'.

What fonts do you want to you?
Fonts for a pop magazine need to be slightly bubbly, however they need to stand out and have a fun edge rather than a solid font.

What kind of image do you expect to put on the front cover and how will you go about getting this image?
The front cover will be of a girl posing as though she's a pop star. In order to achieve this we have booked out a studio so we can get good quality pictures and so that we can take lot's of different varieties of photos.

How frequently would it be published?
It would be published either weekly or monthly so it can keep up-to-date with the latest trends or music etc...

What are the dimensions of the cover?
The magazine will be published in an A4 font as this is the usual size of a music magazine. It also allows me to publish a decent size photo and include lot's of different text and information.

What images/colour would you use on the contents page/front cover/double page spread?
The overall colour scheme will tend to use more feminine colours such as pinks, purples or lighter blues.

What are the ideas for the double page spread?
On the double page spread, it will possibly feature an interview of the person on the front cover, or information on them. It will also include photos of them, however, they should be more relaxed than the photo on the front cover.

Representation of pop musicians and their fans!

Representation of pop musicians and their fans/readers.

Over the years, music has changed and in many ways has become much more influential on the general public. Pop music in particular has become one of the most recognizable music genres around. It covers a range of artists and reaches out to many people and therefore, gains a wide audience.

Pop musicians are often typically ‘well dressed’, wearing the latest fashion items and even changing the fashion in their way. They wear the latest fashion designs giving many young girls a style icon or inspiring them towards dressing like their favourite pop artist. The female pop musicians are often typically very ‘girly’ in which many females aspire to be, whilst the male pop musicians usually take pride in their appearance and are also seen to be wearing the latest designs with the ‘popular’ hair and are often the typical boys in which many girls wish to date. Pop artists nowadays are often represented through shows such as ‘The X-Factor’ and ‘American Idol’. Many pop artists use this as they’re way to break through into the music industry. It’s often more difficult for other genres to be successful through shows like this as these shows are family-type entertainment and pop music often attracts the interest of the general public much more than other genres such as heavy metal or country. Pop musicians are also beginning to carry the stereotype of ‘cheesy’ music in which they talk about their first love or their first heartbreak. The representation of pop musicians change constantly, however, they typical view is that they’re either the girl everyone wants to be or the boy everyone wants to date.

Furthermore, the typical fan of pop music is often presented to be girls either pre-teen (10-12) or teens (13-18) but usually of school age. However, this isn’t always true as there are many boys that are pop fans just as there are older people who also happen to be pop fans. Pop music is often the most played type of music on media devices such as the radio, TV, internet etc… This therefore means that it is more likely that general people who aren’t fans of any specific type of music are more likely to be aware of those artists involved in pop music.  Similarly to the pop artists they follow, the pop fans are also represented to be ‘on-trend’ with the latest fashion items and stereotypically spend a lot of time ‘perfecting their look’ so they can have a similar style to their pop icon.

Often in music magazines the particular artists will dress in a way that matches they’re audience and will try to relate to their fans. The double page spread of Rihanna shows her clearing wearing fashionable clothing and she has clearly spent a great deal of time on her hair and make-up. There is a more personal photo in the middle on the left side which would help her relate to her fans more. They present her in a ¾ length shot showing what she is wearing and also allowing her to pose more evidently.

Overall, both pop musicians and their fans are represented very similarly as they are both typically seen to be up-to-date with the latest fashion trends and keep to a ‘main-stream’  style. The artists try to connect with their fans through what they wear and how they pose in the magazine, just as fans often try to mimic their pop idol icons.

Flat Plan for Music Magazine!

Below is a flat plan for my front cover, Contents page and double page spread of the music magazine. This is only a rough layout and it may change as time goes on.

Monday 14 January 2013

Initial Ideas- Music Magazine!

This is some of my initial ideas which I could include into my music magazine. They are only first draft so might change over time but these are my basic ideas which will start me off.

Target Audience representation; equality and diversity!

How might you ensure you target a secondary audience?

Although my main target audience is aimed at teenage/pre-teenage girls, I will also need to make sure I include a secondary audience. A secondary audience is those people who might also have a slight interest in the topic, in my case, a pop music magazine. However, these people are not who you would typically associate with that particular subject. To include other groups of people, such as teenage boys, I could include a section that would involve them more or include certain girl celebrities or men that teenage boys may typically look up to. The colours could also be more neutral, so rather than choosing typical female colours such as, pinks and purples, I could use more colours such as whites, blacks, reds, grey, cream etc...
I could also aim to attract an older audience by having a feature that would be based upon older pop songs or an old musician. Therefore, an older generation may want to read the magazine as it has something that interests them.

Consider how the genre is represented?

Typical readers of a pop music magazine are;
  • between the ages of 11-19 (teen/pre-teen)
  • mostly female as it often includes articles that interest them.
  • Stereotypes like school children and they are often seen to be fans of typical 'boy-bands' or 'good looking' boys.
  • Typically heterosexual girls.

For my prezi video I found a video showing the basics of how to create a prezi. Once I watched this I was then able to create my own prezi on the conventions of music magazines. I found this video useful as it was clear and very simple which is useful is you are just starting out.
